Countdown to Christmas

Today the official countdown for christmas started. The shops were open between 2 and 6 pm and there were tons of people out shopping and to see the towns official christmas tree. And to see this years Lucia Bride.

Lucia is a very old tradition here in Sweden. Lucia is a virgin who came to help the Swedes during the great famine. Lucia came with light and with bread and fed the hungy.

Since 1973 there's a yearly competion in towns all over Sweden, where a young girl is selected to be the towns Lucia Bride. She is coronated or crowned in the church on Saint Lucy's Day, which is December 13.

Cheers,
Asta

Hej Asta! I love Christmas Eve too and I love the slow build-up during Advent, baking cookies, opening Advent calendar doors, watching candles burn... :-) I hope one day I will be in Sweden on Dec. 13. I have had a small Lucia doll with her candles in her hair ever since I was small!

I will try to see if it is possible to get some shots inside the church on Saint Lucy's Day, because it's such a beautiful ceremony.

It will soon be that special day. Time seems to fly by faster than it did when I was younger. I like your photos.

Your nice photos are softening my grumpy old heart. Maybe looking at them I'll endure a little better a season of the year I don't like much...

Living in Asia Christmas somehow just isn't the same.

While I do enjoy it in the UK there lead up is so commercialised that I actually prefer to be here now and take in the beach on Christmas Day.

Not a turkey in sight-well apart from the odd fat foreign tourist that is!!!

I like the light on these night shots and, especially, the incredible blue on the previous post pic.

Hi Asta,

Thanks for a look at your town getting ready for the holidays...

My folks were part of the Swedish Covenant Church and every Christmas we had a St. Lucia festival.

I'm not sure if they still do that or not.
